Campaign themes

2014

O'Toole's campaign website listed the following themes for the 2014 election:

The office of State Auditor of the State of Missouri is an elected position with a four-year term of office. Duties include the establishment of appropriate systems of accounting for all public officials of the state, post-auditing of the accounts of all state agencies annually and auditing the treasury at least once annually. In addition, the State Auditor establishes appropriate systems of accounting for the political subdivisions of the state, supervises their budgeting systems and audits their accounts as provided by law.

As a Libertarian, I believe that many of the functions the state and its many political subdivisions are executed outside the proper role and scope of government. Our cities and counties regularly spend excessively on studies and consulting work that, with limited exception, recommend more government spending on projects frequently contrary to the best interests of local citizens. If elected, I will be an activist auditor pointing out waste where found and encouraging citizen petitions where needed in order to audit government agencies suspected of such waste.[5]
