Candidate Connection

Stele James participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Stele James' responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. I would like to expand Arkansas' version of CHIP, AR Kids, to cover all our childern in the state. Our current model is discriminating against working class Arkansans and their children, children who have the same vaccination needs, runny noses and God forbid the other possibilities. Its an investment in Arkansas' future will can ill afford to ignore.
2. As a matter of public safety and need expansion of cell phone service is necessary. Cell phone service expansion can provide internet and a safety blanket for travelers and citizens in our very rural state as well as those who enjoy the great outdoor oppurtunities this natural state provides.
3. Our rural highway system is in shambles, the roads we bring our rice, chicken, timber and coutless other raw and finished products to market are long over due an over haul. Its time rural Arkansas had a voice above other.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am very passionate about veterans and living up to the promises made to them. I previously worked as the Director of Veteran Services for Benton County, Arkansas and prior to that for the Texas Veterans Commission as a employment specialist and before that the Texas VFW as an administrative assistant and before that in the Registrars office as an GI Bill education specialist. I know my way around Veterans Services I know the short falls of this state as plain as the nose on my face. As a life long and die hard Razorback, WOO Pig, fan I had to finish my bachelor's degree in Texas at Texas State University, Eat'em Up Cats, because financially Texas was the better financial choice and that's bull and we can do better. Our County Veteran Service Officer Program Hasn't been touched or updated since 1921, the variance of services offered in the 75 counties is geographic discrimination of a population that quite frankly deserves better. Myself being a combat vet and having the work history I have will greatly improve my ability to make a tangible difference for our states veterans.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Stele James answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Working class Arkansans who get up and go to work day in and out ill that day they die or retire and go back to work at something different our my hero. They represent the necessary cogs that keep this thing we call Arkansas going and it for them that I take on this challenge.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
If I had to pick a book the represents my "guide post" its the Bible and if I was even more specific the book of James in the Bible.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I believe the most important traits or characteristics for a public official are honesty, humility, patience, and persistence.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I believe what I offer as a candidate in this race is my understanding of the area, our people, and our needs as community.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibility of an elected official is to represent the needs and beliefs of his constituents.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I'm not interested in a legacy, I live by the philosophy that if you don't care who gets the credit you'll get more done. That being said I want to leave this Earth and my State better than I found it.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was a stocker at a grocery store in Waldron, Arkansas. I held the position for almost 2 years when it was shuttered.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, its an American holiday, its during the best season Arkansas has and celebrates unity of family and friends over a big meal.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book other than the Bible is "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien, "The Hobbit" was my book to read start to finish and at the time I read it allowed me to go far from home without leaving the farm.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
If I could any fictional character I would be Captain America.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My family is my favorite thing about my home.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
The question is "what has been a struggle in my life" and I suppose the answer is the same as yours, all of it. A life without struggle isn't much of a life, I mean really if your not struggling your not trying. I don't say that to discredit anyone whom has encountered some horrible fate and overcame by personal fortitude etc, etc. What I mean to say is what I have dealt with is no more or less than anyone else but like you I get up everyday to do it again. Now that being said combat sucks, real bad.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Our biggest challenge in Arkansas over the next decade will be funding what needs to be done concerning our infrastructure, healthcare, and educating our next generation.[3]
