Three of the seven seats on the Albemarle County Public Schools school board in Virginia were up for general election on November 7, 2017. In her bid for re-election to the Jack Jouett Magisterial District seat, incumbent Katherine Lee Acuff won another term unopposed. In the race for the Rio Magisterial District seat, which was left open when incumbent Pamela Moynihan did not file to run for re-election, Katrina Callsen defeated Mary McIntyre. Incumbent Graham Paige defeated challenger Julian Waters in the race for the Samuel Miller Magisterial District seat.[1]

The Albemarle County school board consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Six members are elected by district, and one member is elected at large. Elections are held on a staggered basis every November of odd-numbered years. Five seats—four regular four-year terms and one two-year term—were up for election on November 3, 2015, and three seats were up for election on November 7, 2017.[2][3]

To qualify as school board candidates, interested parties had to be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and residents of Virginia for at least one year prior to the election. To get on the ballot, candidates had to file nomination paperwork with their county election office by June 13, 2017.[4][5]

To vote in this election, citizens of the school district had to register by October 16, 2017.[6] Photo identification was required to vote in Virginia.[7]

Endorsements

The Albemarle County Democrats endorsed newcomers Katrina Callsen and Mary McIntyre for the Rio District seat and incumbent Graham Paige for the Samuel Miller District seat.[8] McIntyre was also endorsed by Together Cville and the Network for Public Education Action.[9][10]

With one-third of the seats on the ballot unopposed, the 2017 Albemarle County school board election had a lower percentage of unopposed seats compared to the district's 2013 and 2015 elections. In those two previous election years 100 percent and 40 percent of the seats were unopposed, respectively. In 2013, 2015, and 2017, incumbents had a 100 percent success rate, and newcomers were elected to open seats.

The Albemarle County school district is located in Albemarle County, Virginia.

The Albemarle County school district is located in central Virginia in Albemarle County. The county seat is Charlottesville. Albemarle County was home to an estimated 106,878 residents in 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[13] The district was the 20th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 13,681 students.[14]

Demographics

Albemarle County outperformed Virginia as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2011 and 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 51.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.3 percent of state residents. During the same time period, the median household income in the county was $68,449, compared to $65,015 for the entire state. The poverty rate for Albemarle County was 9.5 percent, while it was 11.2 percent statewide.[13]
