I’m a native Minnesotan and grew up on a farm. I graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a BA in Spanish and Geology, hold an MA from San Diego State University in Spanish Linguistics, and an MS in Higher Education Administration from Saint Cloud State University. I am currently a PhD Candidate in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University.

I have spent my career in higher education, including nearly 15 years as a professor of Spanish. As I honed my leadership skills along the way, I realized that my strengths in strategic systems thinking, collaborative problem solving, and personnel management and development were being underutilized in the classroom. I transitioned into administration over a decade ago, and currently serve as the Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at Gustavus.

I believe in the power of education to fundamentally change the trajectory of individual lives, communities, and society. A strong public school education has provided me with social mobility, an ethos of care for community, and the building blocks of success in life, and I moved to Chanhassen because of the quality of our public education system. It has been an honor to work to make our great district even better over the past four years.

In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my two high schoolers and family, playing tennis, skiing, gardening, cooking and baking, watching sports, keeping current on news and politics, and staying involved in my community.
  • Consistent Investment in Our Schools: While it’s important that members of the board advocate for taxpayer support of public education, it’s also essential that they engage in critical examination of district budgets. Analysis and scrutiny on both the revenue and expense sides of the equation help ensure each dollar is being spent wisely with intent to maximize impact. The Board and district leadership have implemented creative solutions to ensure that needs for capital projects, curricular innovation, and personnel have been met while maintaining sound fiscal stewardship of limited resources. Going forward, we must continue to anticipate needs, identify strategic investment opportunities, demonstrate returns, and maintain community trust.
  • Communication and Relationship Building: Proactive, consistent communication from district leadership is a cornerstone of accountability and trust. Area residents deserve timely, transparent updates in formats that reflect how they consume information, in addition to opportunities to both hear from and engage with board members outside of official board meetings. Given the recent discontinuation of our local newspapers, maintaining open lines of communication and developing creative solutions to ensure community members have the information they need to remain informed is more important than ever. I take my duty to listen and respond to community feedback seriously while serving as a vocal advocate for public education.
  • Increased Sophistication in Data-Driven Decision-Making: Closing achievement gaps, improving outcomes, and rectifying systems that perpetuate educational injustice are laudable goals, and they’re critical to delivering on our mission of exceptional, personalized learning for ALL. Knowing where our students are in their learning, what they need to make progress, and how to get them there will allow us to continue to build on documented success. My strong background in assessment and evaluation will continue to push our leaders and staff to think critically and creatively about what to measure and effective responses to the challenges and opportunities illuminated by the data.
I am passionate about policy that helps rectify injustices, safeguards against infringement on civil rights, and prioritizes quality public education as a fundamental human right in the United States. This relates in significant ways to questions around funding, but also to questions around safety and access.
From managing significant budgets, developing and stewarding strategic plans, engaging in equity work, and evaluating complex programs and initiatives, I am a visionary leader, a dynamic communicator, and an empathetic listener with a strong track record of collaboration to maximize innovation, efficiency and impact. As a former educator, I am well versed in theory and practice around student success and assessment and have been able to bring that expertise to the board table to offer feedback on how to refine data-driven decision-making across the system. Finally, as an incumbent running for reelection, I have direct experience serving in this role and understand the critical work of diligent oversight of ECCS policy and budgets.
The core responsibilities of a school board member include budgetary monitoring and approval, oversight of policy and curricular development and revision, hiring and evaluation of the superintendent, long-term planning, and community engagement. In each of these formal roles, it is critical that board members work to ensure district compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations while maintaining high ethical standards to accommodate that which is not governed strictly by law but also has important implications for district effectiveness. Beyond these formal responsibilities, it is important that board members serve as vocal advocates for public education and the people who have chosen to serve in all roles in service to school districts. Board members are thoughtful listeners, effective communicators, and optimistic drivers of the direction of a district.
