Campaign themes

2016

Buckvold's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Transportation:

  • St. Cloud to the metro is the most traveled and fastest-growing corridor in the state. Area representatives should be working toward addressing the increased transportation needs in this corridor.
  • I have a strong record of leadership with the “Finish Northstar” campaign, which began in March 2015. By the start of legislative session 2016, we had more than 5,000 signatures of support from across four legislative districts, overwhelming support from the business community, St. Cloud State University and numerous other organizations. In a St. Cloud Times online questionnaire, 466 people said extending Northstar was worth the investment.
  • As lead organizer for this campaign, I repeatedly made clear Northstar was not a campaign opposing roads, but hopefully would be included as a project in a larger transportation bill.
  • Unfortunately, lawmakers did not pass a transportation bill. This is why I am running for House 13A. I am fiercely committed to working with lawmakers, regardless of party labels, who want to take responsibility and get things done.
  • I will bring the necessary cross-partisan leadership to the legislature if elected. I want to work on issues that bring people together, rather than those that further divide us.

Economic Opportunity:

  • Access to affordable child care is essential. The Legislature did increase funding for Basic Sliding Fee Child Care Assistance, so parents can go to school or work. But with thousands of Minnesota families currently on waiting lists for Basic Sliding Fee, there is still much more to do.
  • The Legislature also expanded the Working Family Tax Credit and Child and Dependent Care Credit, which helps.
  • The Legislature also needs to expand access to earned sick leave so that workers don’t lose wages or their jobs when they get sick or take the time to care for sick family members. More than a million Minnesotans lose wages and sometimes their jobs if they take time off to care for themselves or a loved one.
  • I am committed to support solutions across party lines for Minnesotans who struggle to make ends meet and get ahead.

Education:

  • If kids are ready to learn by the time they start kindergarten, they do better throughout their lives. The Legislature did put some funds toward access to voluntary pre-kindergarten. Much more needs to be done to bring together parents and our business, faith, health care and school communities to make sure kids enter kindergarten fully prepared for learning success.
  • In our schools today, nearly half of Minnesota kids are on free- and reduced-price school lunches. If kids are coming to school hungry, that makes learning more difficult.
  • We need smaller class sizes so students can get the attention they need to succeed and teachers can deal effectively with a great variety of students with different backgrounds and achievement levels.
  • I will take a bipartisan, comprehensive approach to these important issues.[1]
