Two seats on the Arlington Public Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

The at-large seat occupied by Sally M. Baird was open as she did not file for re-election. Barbara Kanninen and Audrey R. Clement vied for her seat, with Kanninen winning. The other race was for a two-year term that resulted from the resignation of board member Noah Simon. Nancy Van Doren was appointed to that seat in September 2014; she ran unopposed in the November election.[1]

Arlington Public Schools is located in Arlington County, Virginia. Arlington County was home to 224,906 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Arlington Public Schools was the 13th-largest school district in Virginia and served 21,892 students.[3]

Demographics

Arlington County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 71.7 percent of Arlington County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Arlington County was $103,208 compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate in Arlington County was 8.0 percent compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Arlington School Board consists of five at-large members that serve staggered four-year terms. The board is officially nonpartisan, though there is a history of candidates being endorsed by parties. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014.[5]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was June 10, 2014.[6]
