Two of the seven seats on the Birdville Independent School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on May 7, 2016. The election was canceled, however, due to lack of opposition. Incumbent Ralph Kunkel automatically won re-election to Place 6, and Taylor Anderson won election to the open Place 7 seat after incumbent Cary Hancock chose not to file for re-election.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information

The Birdville ISD Board of Trustees is composed of seven members who are elected by district to three-year terms in specifically numbered seats. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. Places 6 and 7 were scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[3]

Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[3]

Birdville Independent School District is located in Tarrant County, Texas

Birdville Independent School District is located in Tarrant County in Texas. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tarrant County was home to 1,982,498 residents between 2010 and 2015.[7] The district was the 52nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 24,326 students.[8]


Demographics

Between 2010 and 2014 Tarrant County outperformed Texas as a whole in higher education achievement. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.1 percent statewide. The median household income from 2010 to 2014 was $57,727 compared to $52,576 for the entire state of Texas. The county poverty rate was 15.2 percent in 2014 compared to the state rate of 17.2 percent.[7]
