Two of the seven seats on the Brick Township Public Schools school board were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. No incumbents ran for re-election in the race. Newcomers Melita Gagliardi and Daisy Haffner defeated John O'Rourke, Madeline Colagiovanni-Iannarone, Walter Campbell, and Victor Finamore for the open seats.[1]

Brick Township Public Schools are overseen by a seven member board elected at large to three-year terms. Two of the seven seats were up for general election on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]
Individuals interested in running for the school board must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, and registered to vote. Candidates have to reside in the school district for at least one year prior to the election. School board candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or be a member of the governing body of Brick Township. They also cannot be convicted of a felony.[2]

The Brick Township school board election shared the ballot with federal elections for President of the United States and United States Representative. There were two statewide ballot measures on the ballot. There were also municipal elections for Ocean County sheriff and freeholder.[3]

About the district
The Brick Township school district is located in Ocean County in east-central New Jersey. The county seat is Toms River. Ocean County was home to 588,721 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 22nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,456 students.[8]
Demographics
Ocean County underperformed compared to New Jersey as a whole in terms of education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income for Ocean County was $61,839, compared to the statewide average of $72,062. The poverty rate for the county was 11.9 percent, while it was 10.8 percent for the entire state.[7]
