Christopher Barry was a candidate for Position 5 representative on the Hillsboro School Board in Oregon. He lost in the general election on May 19, 2015.

Over five years after the first proposal was made, it appeared a land swap between Hillsboro School District and neighboring Beaverton School District might finally move forward in 2015. While there was vocal debate in Hillsboro, which was the point of instigation for the proposed district changes, Beaverton had not responded to calls to meet and discuss the change as of late April 2015.

Campaign themes

Barry provided the following statement for the Washington County voter's pamphlet:

When I speak to parents about Hillsboro schools, I hear the following:

“Class sizes are too large. “

“Teachers are too stressed out. “

“The Schools have enough money already. Why can’t they show greater improvement and results?”

As a father of three kids in the Hillsboro School District, I am passionate about the education of our children. I got involved with the Hillsboro School District Budget Committee to educate myself about the facts regarding the finances of the School District. I’ve found out where the school district gets their funding and what kinds of programs and mandates compete for the limited amount of financial resources. This multi-faceted array of funding sources that fluctuate and cannot be relied upon can cause shortages that lead to budget shortfalls that stress out the school district and the community. I will work to ensure our schools get the money they need in a more reliable way, and put that money to programs that will create better outcomes for our students.

My past experience running and working on committees and boards, managing budgets and meetings consisting of people with differing opinions, gives me experience, strategies and ideas that will be valuable to the School District. Together we can work to improve the system and educational experience for our students.[4]
