One of the seven seats on the Conway Public Schools school board was up for general election on September 20, 2016. The Zone 3 incumbent did not file for re-election. Diane Robinson defeated candidate Jenny Cunningham to win the seat.

The Conway school board consists of seven members elected by district to five-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on September 20, 2016. The Zone 3 seat was the sole seat up for election.[1]

Individuals interested in running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not be convicted of a felony.[2]

Conway Public Schools is located in Faulkner County in central Arkansas. The county seat is Conway. Faulkner County was home to an estimated 121,552 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the eighth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,993 students.[7]

Demographics

Faulkner County outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of median household income, educational attainment, and poverty rate. The median household income in the county was $51,095, compared to a statewide median income of $41,264. The Census Bureau found that 27.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 20.6 percent for the entire state. The poverty rate in Faulkner County was 14.7 percent, compared to 18.9 percent statewide.[6]
