Candidate Connection

Otis Johnson participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on February 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Otis Johnson's responses follow below.[5]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Cleaning up any student classroom disruption issues.

2) Support and mentoring of the teaching staff to not only attract the best teachers, but also retain them.
3) Being fiscally responsible, yet progressive with the district budgets.[6][7]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about every student and educator having a safe learning environment free from any negative disruptions that prevent other students from being able to learn. Without a positive classroom environment in every classroom, the greater goal of district improvement will only be more difficult to attain. Also, the school board has not always fuctioned in what seems to be the districts best interest. Meeting rules and transparency have been issues in the past. As an agent of change, I believe I can help the board form positive working relationships to get the business of the district accomplished as efficiently and effectively as possible.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[7]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Otis Johnson answered the following:

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am a very pragmatic thinker and open to many various point of view. Filtering the information available to make the best decision possible at the time is one of my strengths.[7]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Core responsibilities for a school board member would be approving the district finances, hiring/firing administrators, providing direction to administrators and approving any district policies or student codes.[7]
How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?
Continuing to support the circulum to allow the students the opportunity to explore many varied interests and activities, while providing the faculty and staff with the support, tools and training necessary to effectively do their job is essential. By providing top tier education and facilities at a cost beneficial level, the revitalization of the community will continue through increased property values and quality of life improvements.[7]
What type of skills should students be learning for success in the 21st century?
The ability of students to stay on the leading edge of technology will be important not only for their future employment and income potential, but also the success of the community and region as a whole. Continuous improvement of up to date ciculum as we move into the future is a must.[7]
