Two seats on the Half Hollow Hills Central School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 19, 2015. The election shared the ballot with the school district's annual budget vote.[1][2]

No incumbents filed to run for re-election. The race featured four candidates, Stephanie Gurin, Adam Kleinberg, Scott McElhiney and Adrian Montalvo, running for the two open seats.[3] The candidates split into two factions, with Gurin and Kleinberg running together as a candidate slate, and McElhiney and Montalvo running as another slate.[4][5] Gurin and Kleinberg were elected to the board.[6]

Half Hollow Hills Central School District is located in Suffolk County in southeastern New York. The county seat is Riverhead. Suffolk County was home to 1,499,738 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] During the 2012-2013 school year, Half Hollow Hills Central was the 18th-largest school district in New York and served 9,427 students.[8]

Demographics

Suffolk County underperformed in comparison to the rest of New York in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 32.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 33.2 percent for New York as a whole. The median household income in Suffolk County was $87,763, compared to $58,003 statewide. The poverty rate was 6.4 percent, compared to 15.3 percent for the entire state.[7]

Voter and candidate information

The Half Hollow Hills Board of Education consists of seven members elected at large to three-year terms on a staggered basis every year in May.[10][11] Three seats were up for election in 2014, and two seats were up for election in 2015. Voters could vote for both seats in the election. The two candidates who received the most votes were considered elected to the board. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 19, 2015.[1][2]

School board candidates must be at least 18 years old, qualified voters in the district and residents of the district for at least one year prior to the election. They must be able to read and write, and they cannot be employees of the school district, members of the same household as another member on the board or have been removed from a school board within a year of the election.[12] To get on the ballot, candidates had to file nominating petitions containing a minimum of 58 signatures of qualified voters with the district clerk on April 20, 2015.[2]

To vote in this election, residents of the district had to register with the district clerk by May 14, 2015.[2] Voters must be at least 18 years old and residents of the district for at least 30 days prior to the election.[13]
