My name is Hendrix Percival Lewis, and I am running for the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education. I was born in Bryan, Texas, and I am proud to call Aurora home today. I am a husband and the proud parent of two children. I earned an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Commonwealth International University in 1998, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information System Management from Colorado Christian University in 2001, and a Master of Arts in Computer Resources and Information Management from Webster University in 2004. I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership at the University of Phoenix. Professionally, I work in the aerospace industry as a Principal Quality Software Engineer Lead. I am also a committed member of Zion Baptist Church in Denver, CO.
  • As a board member, I will bring authentic community engagement. As a parent of two APS students, I understand the importance of listening to parents, teachers, staff, and the broader community. I am committed to open communication, transparency, and collaboration so we can ask tough questions, find meaningful solutions, and work together to ensure every child in APS receives the high-quality education they deserve.
  • As a board member, I will bridge communication gaps. I will be a bridge-builder you can trust, committed to open communication and clarity in decision-making. Too often, gaps between parents, teachers, staff, and leadership create misunderstandings that hinder our progress. I will listen first, foster transparency, and ensure our community understands how and why decisions are made. By building trust and facilitating effective communication, we can collaborate to develop solutions that genuinely benefit our students.
  • As a board member, I will bring a focus on inclusiveness. Together, we can ask hard questions, find real solutions, and ensure every student receives a high-quality education. I will value every voice, parents, teachers, staff, and the community, while advocating for fairness, equity, and inclusion, so all APS students have the opportunity to succeed.
That I made a difference in a family's life.
The Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. I recall the school showing the Space Shuttle blowing up as it was lifting off to orbit. I was 12 years old.
Taco Bell, from my sophomore year of high school until I was 20.
I really enjoy reading cookbooks. It is something that relaxes me and I enjoy looking at the different ingredients, wondering if I can do the same thing, but better.
One struggle I’ve faced in life is being told to wait my turn or let someone else go first, with the idea that my time will come later. I learned early on that waiting patiently is important, but it also taught me the value of persistence, self-advocacy, and standing up when it matters. This experience drives me today to ensure that every voice is heard, to take initiative when needed, and to work towards solutions rather than waiting for someone else to act.
The primary responsibility of a school board member is to ensure the success and improvement of the entire school district, benefiting the community. As board members, we represent the values of the people we serve and work alongside the superintendent to create a thriving school district where every student can succeed.
My constituents are the parents, students, teachers, school staff, businesses, organizations, and community members with or without children.
I would ensure schools are adequately funded by advocating for fair funding that prioritizes student needs. I would also build strong partnerships with local businesses and organizations and demand transparency to ensure resources directly support the classrooms.
My ideal learning environment is one where every student has access to supportive tools and resources that help them succeed, even when the teacher is not immediately available. Class sizes are smaller, allowing teachers to provide more one-on-one attention to each student. It is a space where learning is enhanced, every student feels supported, and bullying or negative peer pressure has no place.
I am proud to have completed all of my doctoral coursework and am now focused on finishing my dissertation. This accomplishment reflects my commitment to lifelong learning, discipline, and setting goals—and it drives me to bring the same dedication and perseverance to serving our students and community.
