Hi, my name is Isaac Sung, and I’m running for the Sun Prairie School Board. I’m running to bring fresh ideas and real improvements to our schools. My focus is on empowering students, advocating for teachers and families, and collaborating with the community to create positive change. With a PhD in Computer Sciences and Education, I bring both research-based problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of education.
  • Student Safety & Engagement – Every student has the right to a high-quality public education, and both students and staff deserve a safe and respectful environment. Each building needs adequate support staff to help with behavior management, and all staff need training in areas like trauma-informed care and conscious discipline. It is also important that the district carefully tracks behavior incidents without pressuring staff to underreport them. If we address behavior issues poorly or use ineffective metrics, we risk creating a culture where problems are ignored instead of solved. We need transparency around behavior and safety trends so issues can be properly addressed.
  • Teacher Retention & Recruitment - To keep great teachers, we first need to understand why they are leaving. I would meet with teachers to hear their concerns and conduct anonymous surveys to get honest feedback. Exit interviews should also be required for all departing staff, and the results analyzed to spot trends across different schools and experience levels. Based on what I already know, we need to offer competitive pay by bringing back a step-based salary schedule, cut unnecessary administrative burdens, and create a positive, supportive work environment. Addressing these issues is key to making our district a place where teachers want to come and stay.
  • Trust and Communication - We need to build trust with the community and staff by being open about major decisions, like curriculum changes, and involving people early. The district should take responsibility for mistakes rather than reacting defensively to controversy. Families and educators should feel informed and heard. To increase community participation, meetings should offer childcare, alternative times beyond weekday evenings, and virtual options. The board represents the community and voters and should seek direct feedback from them instead of relying solely on information from district administrators. These steps will help ensure more voices shape our schools.
I am passionate about public education funding because investing in our children is the best way to improve our country's future. Wisconsin lags behind many other states in providing fair, equitable funding for school districts. Despite having a budget surplus, the state government has failed to provide the resources necessary to keep our public education system strong.
Honesty, transparency, and listening skills are important in this position. A school board member in this district is supposed to represent the roughly 35,000 people who live in the city of Sun Prairie. Without great communication skills, a board member would not be able to know what their constituents actually desire and want from someone in this office.
The school board operates under a coherent governance model. This means that the board members do not dictate day-to-day details, but instead sets expectations and goals for the district to accomplish. If the district fails to meet those goals, then the board holds them accountable and must offer guidance in order to get them back on track. As such, a board member must be willing and able to set appropriate, measurable goals, and must be willing to hold the district accountable when necessary. They must also have enough knowledge to be able to offer plans of improvement if and when the district fails to meet expectations.
Growing up in a Korean-American immigrant household and going to a school where the vast majority of students were white was a struggle for me. I was a victim of bullying because of my ethnicity for many years - being called the "Chinese kid", having kids say slurs, or making offensive gestures to me because of my race - this is not something that any child should ever have to go through. It made me want to distance myself from my cultural identity, and it wasn't until I reached college that I was finally able to start reclaiming my pride in my Korean-American identity.

I believe this is why representation in schools and media is so important, and strict anti-bullying policies should be set in place. Diverse, culturally responsive education is also key, so that potential bullies will know better and do better.
Everyone who lives within the district boundaries.
Every student deserves to be safe, respected, and have the opportunity to learn in a public school building.
