An effort to recall Village Council President James Soriano did not go to a vote in Barryton, Michigan.[1]

Recall supporters

Resident Jeff Nelson initiated the recall campaign. Nelson alleged that Soriano negotiated to sell village land to M66 Group, LLC. despite having a conflict of interest, namely, that he had rented a home from and mowed grass for the company.[1]

Recall opponents

Soriano denied that he had worked for M66 Group or had a financial contract with them.[1]

In Michigan, a recall petition must first be filed with the appropriate elections board, which then holds a hearing to determine whether the petition gives grounds for recall that are sufficiently clear.

If the petition is approved by the board, petitioners must gather a number of signatures equal to 25% of the number of votes cast for governor in the last general election in the electoral district of the officer sought to be recalled.[2] Petitioners have 60 days to collect these signatures beginning on the date the first signature is collected; however, the petition must be submitted no later than 180 days after it was approved by the board.
