An effort in Traverse City, Michigan, to recall Mayor Jim Carruthers and City Commissioner Richard Lewis was initiated in June 2018.[1] Petitioners had until August 2018 to submit enough signatures to trigger a recall for Lewis and until January 2019 to trigger a recall for Carruthers.[1] Recall supporters failed to submit enough signatures.

Petitioners began the recall process in June 2018, after Carruthers and Lewis voted to raise property taxes within the city. Traverse City citizen Larry Gerschbacher launched the recall effort, arguing that Carruthers and Lewis should have put the tax increase to a public vote rather than raising taxes through the city council vote.[1]

Michigan law says that petitioners have 60 days after a petition is approved to collect a number of signatures equal to 25 percent of the votes cast in the district for governor in the last gubernatorial election. Petitioners had until August 2018 to submit 1515 signatures to trigger a recall of Lewis and until January 2019 to submit 1515 signatures to trigger a recall of Carruthers.[2] Supporters failed to collect enough signatures for either recall.
