Three seats on the Lubbock Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the at-large race, Laura Vinson defeated fellow challengers Boyd Goodloe and Brett Underwood. District 3 and 4 incumbents, Mark Blankenship and James Arnold were each re-elected to their respective seats in unopposed races.[1]

Lubbock Independent School District is located in Lubbock, Texas. The city's population was 229,573 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Lubbock outperforms the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment but underperforms in terms of median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 29.3 percent of Lubbock residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Lubbock had a median income of $42,584 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Lubbock was 21.2 percent in 2010, compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Lubbock Board of Trustees consists of seven members, two of whom serving at-large and five by geographic district. They serve four-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for three seats. Four seats will be on the ballot in May 2016.[3]
