- My name is Melissa Daub, and I was elected to the Wayne County Commission in November 2018, where I have the privilege of representing Wayne County's 10th District, comprising Canton Township, Plymouth Township, and the City of Plymouth. I am a graduate of Plymouth-Canton High School and Eastern Michigan University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Prior to serving as the Wayne County Commissioner for District 10 (Plymouth-Canton), I worked in the accounting field, where I had extensive background in both leadership and individual contributor positions. Having the opportunity to serve my hometown of Plymouth-Canton on the Wayne County Commission is an honor and a responsibility that I do not take lightly. I ran for this office in 2018 on the commitment of increasing transparency and accountability in Wayne County government; that, and my commitment to giving the people of Plymouth-Canton a voice in county governance, is why I am running for re-election.
  • One of the greatest challenges we face in Wayne County is maintaining adequate staffing in all departments. Without county employees, we cannot provide services to our residents in a timely and effective manner. In response to this challenge, a Staffing and Benefits Task Force was established in 2023. The Task Force made several recommendations to the County Executive’s Office regarding compensation and benefits packages and free employee parking. Addressing this challenge in 2024 will require ongoing efforts and consistent follow-up.
  • Roads and Infrastructure continue to be a high priority for Wayne County. Commissioner Daub pushed for the approval of $7 million in the 2023-24 budget, which will go towards repairing township roads. With the recent changes in our climate, drain repair and maintenance has risen to the top of this list. In September 2023, Commissioner Daub introduced a resolution supporting HB 4382-83 to amend Chapter 22 of the Michigan Drain Code of 1956. This amendment would allow Drain Commissioners to have access to additional stormwater management tools to mitigate storm damage. She regularly meets with the Department of Public Services and the Drain Commissioner to resolve issues within the district.
  • Whether it is money for roads, bridges, or senior services, Wayne County residents deserve to know how their money is spent. If re-elected, I will continue to advocate for better service to my constituents, and further investment in the Plymouth-Canton community.
Infrastructure, environmental issues, women's issues, and public health
- The Wayne County Commission has seven standing committees which correspond with other county-level agencies or offices. For example, the Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary, and Homeland Security often works on matters pertaining to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and the Wayne County Third Circuit Court. These offices oftentimes collaborate with their state-level counterparts, allowing the Wayne County Commission to play a unique and important role in contributing to other government and legal systems. In addition, as Board Vice President of the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), I have been able to work on platforms that influence state policies on behalf of Michigan counties and my constituents.
As a lifelong resident of Canton, I have seen the Plymouth-Canton community go through incredible growth and change in recent decades. I hope to continue the progress we have made in recent years, and hope to someday leave the legacy of being a champion for my community.
Wayne County is the most populated county in the State of Michigan, and the Wayne County Commission oversees an annual operating budget of $2.02 billion. With this budget, the county facilitates vital services such as veterans’ services, senior services, parks and recreation services, and road repairs. Despite the fact that county government is often not discussed, the decisions made by the Wayne County Commission play a very important role in residents' lives.
- Because the Wayne County Commission is tasked with approving the operating budget for Wayne County, I believe that it is helpful for holders of this office to have a background in budgeting or accounting. Prior to serving as the Wayne County Commissioner for District 10, I personally worked in the accounting field, where I had extensive background in both leadership and individual contributor positions. As Chair of the Wayne County Commission's Committee on Audit, my experience as an accounting professional has helped immensely when it comes to reviewing the reports made by the Office of the Legislative Auditor General, which ensure that there is transparency and accountability of public funds for Wayne County taxpayers.

  • Accessibility: The Wayne County Commission is an incredibly important body of government; however, it often goes unseen and unheard of by members of the general public. Whether it be through hosting coffee hours, town halls (in-person and online), responding to phone calls and emails, or posting my activities on social media, I am proud to have fostered an accessibility between my office and the general public.
  • Transparency: Many members of the public cannot attend the Commission's in-person meetings in downtown Detroit, and this lack of accessibility creates an inherent lack of transparency. I believe that Wayne County taxpayers have the right to know what their government is doing. For this reason, during my first term in office, I effectively advocated for all Wayne County Commission meetings to be visually-recorded and made available online for residents to access freely.
  • Better Services: Whether it be money for roads, bridges, or senior services, Wayne County residents deserve to know how their money is spent. If re-elected, I will continue to advocate for better service to my constituents, and further investment in the Plymouth-Canton community.
I am personally passionate about transportation and road-related policy. In 2019, I was appointed to serve on the Wayne County Commission's Committee on Public Services, which - among other things - works with Wayne County's Department of Public Services on matters pertaining to roads, bridges, and drains. In order to learn more about federal and state issues that affect Wayne County roads, I have joined the National Association of Counties (NACo) Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, in addition to the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC) Committee on Transportation. As the Wayne County Commissioner for the 10th District, I am proud to have approved road projects in Plymouth-Canton, including intersection improvements at Sheldon Road and Goldsmith Road, improvements to Cherry Hill Road, temporary support structures for the Hines Drive Bridges, turn lane and signal improvements at 5 Mile Road and Beck Road, and the reconstruction and reopening of the Lilley Road Bridge.

I believe that elected officials must act as a steward in public service, representing the voice and the will of his or her constituents. I also believe that while elected officials cannot be a subject-matter expert on every topic, they should always be willing to do the necessary work to be informed on the issues that matter most to their constituents.

I began my first job in high school as a receptionist at the Fantastic Sam's on Ford Road in Canton. Through this job, which I had for about three years, I learned valuable customer service skills, including how to help people efficiently and effectively.
