2014
The August 26, 2014, general election in Hillsborough County featured three seats up for election. The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in any of the districts, the top two vote recipients in all three races advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.
District 6 incumbent April Griffin was the only board member to seek re-election and faced a challenge from seven other candidates in the general election. Griffin advanced to the runoff election with challenger Dipa Shah.
Newcomers Sally Harris, Michelle Popp Shimberg and Michael Weston ran for the District 2 seat. Shimberg and Harris advanced to the runoff election. Terry Kemple, Dee Prether and Melissa Snively sought election to the District 4 seat. Snively and Temple advanced to the runoff election for the open seat.

“ | Melissa’s Agenda:
When parents send their children off to school each morning, parents should feel confident that their kids are going to be in the safest and most secure environment possible. Students and teachers should be in a comfortable, secure environment designed for optimal learning. My plan is to employ a fully trained resource officer at each facility, teacher training in emergency procedures, promote the installation of emergency call buttons in each classroom, and make sure that every school has a safety plan. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT If we are going to generate a workforce that will compete globally and meet the ever-changing economic demands, we must leverage our financial resources in the most efficient and effective ways possible. As a small business owner, I believe in managing every detail of the budget. I will bring my strong financial management and oversight experience to the School Board and ensure we are managing your tax dollars wisely with student achievement as the bottom line. I believe every choice the School Board makes should ultimately benefit the children and increase the resources available to them. CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION I strongly believe that we could do a much better job with identifying competencies and skills at an earlier grade level and, if not college or military bound, we should be encouraging students to get training in a technical or vocational skill before they graduate from high school. I believe that it IS the responsibility of our school district to provide any program that will benefit the education and career opportunities available to our students. Different students have different strengths and can have varying paths to success. However, each child should be able to excel and reach their full potential. It is the responsibility of the schools to identify this potential and to provide the resources that the student needs to excel. We should be producing students who learn and develop skills to become self-sufficient and contributing members of society. EMPLOYEE ACHIEVEMENT As a small business owner, I understand the importance of getting the right people on a team and into positions that maximize competencies and skills. The people we choose to educate and lead our students into the future are our biggest asset, and it starts at the top. Our School Board members and administrators should be well-educated individuals who not only have leadership skills and knowledge of common business practices, but are also familiar with current curriculum and trends affecting education. The teachers we choose should have leadership ability and should be rewarded for superior performance and should be retained with appropriate recognition and incentives. We should continue to offer premier professional development opportunities that will help teachers become more confident and excel in the classroom, which ultimately benefits the students. Many teachers feel undervalued and underappreciated at times. We need to think creatively about ways of making teachers realize that they are the highly regarded as educational professionals, such as reaching out to the business community and cultivating partnerships to promote teacher accomplishments[4] |
