Michael G. Gotsch
Michael Gerald Gotsch is a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Gotsch was named a magistrate on April 26, 2016, succeeding Judge Christopher Nuechterlein, who retired from the federal bench. Gotsch assumed his position on the district court on August 12, 2016. Gotsch retired on August 11, 2024.[1][2]
Prior to his elevation to the federal bench, he was a judge for the St. Joseph County Circuit Court in Indiana. He was first appointed to that court in 2004 by Governor Joe Kernan (D). He was later elected to the court in 2004 and re-elected in 2010.[3][4]
Education
Gotsch earned both his B.A. (1979) and his J.D. (1987) from the University of Notre Dame. From 1979 to 1980, Gotsch attended graduate studies at St. John's University in New York City.[5]

Judicial career
U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana
On April 26, 2016, Gotsch was selected to serve as a federal magistrate judge by judges from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana upon the recommendation of a merit selection panel and in accordance with 28 U.S.C. Section 631 and governing regulations for the selection of magistrates. His appointment became effective with Judge Christopher Nuechterlein's retirement from the federal bench. Gotsch began his eight-year term as a federal magistrate judge on August 12, 2016. [7][8][5]
Elections
2010

Gotsch was re-elected to the St. Joseph County Circuit Court of Indiana in 2010. He received 100 percent of the vote in the general election and was elected to a second six-year term that began on January 1, 2011.[4]
2004
In 2004, Gotsch ran unopposed to the St. Joseph County Circuit Court of Indiana.[9]
