Hello, I am Alderwoman Monet S. Wilson, and I am proud to be the first African American Alderwoman in the history of Calumet City. Representation matters, and I carry that honor with pride. As a dedicated legislator, I prioritize transparency, ensuring that I safeguard the public trust and remain accountable to all of my constituents.

Having lived in Calumet City for over 30 years, my journey began in high school with my first job at Dominick’s, now known as Pete’s. This community is dear to my heart, and I truly value my neighbors and our shared experiences. I tirelessly advocate for our collective concerns, working to legislate for lower property taxes and passing supportive legislation for our first responders while speaking truth to power.

The sustainability of families in our city has always been my top priority. I lead with consistency, care, and compassion, believing in a Vision of WE. It is a privilege to serve this community, and I am committed to making Calumet City a better place for everyone.🧡
  • Representation and Accountability: As the first African American Alderwoman in the history of Calumet City, I carry the responsibility of ensuring that every voice in our community is heard and represented. My commitment to transparency and accountability is unwavering; I believe that these qualities are essential for building trust between elected officials and constituents. I actively seek to engage with residents, listen to their concerns, and involve them in the decision-making process. Additionally, I recognize that access to quality education is a fundamental right that empowers our youth and families, and I will advocate for initiatives that strengthen our local schools, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed.
  • Advocacy for Families and Lower Taxes: I am dedicated to advocating for the needs of families in Calumet City, understanding that the economic well-being of our residents directly impacts our community’s quality of life. I tirelessly work to identify and implement solutions to lower property taxes, which can be a significant burden for many families. My goal is to create a sustainable future for all residents by promoting policies that enhance economic stability and foster growth. I believe that when families thrive, our entire community benefits.
  • Economic Development: I am passionate about economic development in Calumet City, as it is crucial for creating job opportunities and enhancing the overall prosperity of our community. My approach involves supporting local businesses and encouraging new investments that can invigorate our economy. I believe that by creating a vibrant business environment, we can attract diverse industries that provide quality jobs for our residents. Additionally, I focus on developing initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and small business growth, recognizing their vital role in our economy. A thriving economy not only benefits individual families but also strengthens our community as a whole, creating a better future for everyone in Calumet City.
I am personally passionate about several key areas of public policy that I believe are vital for the well-being of our community:

1. Affordable Housing
Access to safe and affordable housing and solutions for lower property taxes.

2. Economic Development
Supporting local businesses and attracting new investments while creating policies that promote entrepreneurship and job creation are crucial for enhancing the quality of life for residents and ensuring a vibrant, sustainable economy.

3. Public Safety
Pass legislation that provides first responders with the resources they need to serve effectively. Equip residents with tools to keep them safe.

4. Education

Investing in our schools and supporting teachers empowers generations.
As an Alderwoman, I hold a unique position that is essential to both the state government and the legal system. One of my primary responsibilities is to represent my community, ensuring that the voices and concerns of my constituents are actively addressed in local government. This connection creates accountability and allows me to respond to the specific needs of the people I serve.

In addition to representation, I participate in the legislative process, crafting and approving ordinances that significantly impact daily life in our district. This role empowers me to tackle issues such as public safety, housing, and economic development, shaping policies that directly benefit our community.

Engaging with residents is another critical aspect of my position. I prioritize outreach efforts, holding town hall meetings and forums to discuss pressing community issues. This engagement encourages civic participation and motivates my constituents to take an active role in local governance, fostering a sense of ownership.

I also play a vital role in overseeing the budgetary process, reviewing and approving allocations for essential services. It is my duty to ensure that taxpayer funds are managed responsibly and directed toward community priorities, which is crucial for maintaining trust.

I am committed to advocating for social justice and equity within my community. By championing policies that promote inclusivity and fairness, I work to address disparities and create a more equitable environment for all residents. Overall, my role as an Alderwoman is about creating a community where every voice is valued and every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
I look up to my mother, the honorable Maureen Forté, a true history maker and civil rights activist. Her pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication to justice have always inspired me. As the former head of chapters for both the NAACP and Rainbow Push, she has paved the way for many, including me. Currently, she serves as the president of Chicago’s Chapter of the National Action Network, continuing her fight for equality and social change.

My admiration for her is rooted in a family legacy of activism. I come from a lineage that includes remarkable figures like Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who played a crucial role in the civil rights movement, and leaders who are my family, such as Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., Rev. Al Sharpton, and Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Their commitment to social justice and their ability to inspire others have left a profound mark on my life and the community.

My grandfather, Willis Jones Sr., also played a significant role in shaping my values. He instilled in us a work ethic that is second to none and taught us the importance of fighting for what is right. His lessons on perseverance and integrity resonate with me every day. Following in my mother’s footsteps and honoring the legacy of those who came before me, I strive to contribute to the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in our society. My mother’s example fuels my passion, and I am determined to continue the fight for civil rights.
I would recommend the book “The Conscience of a Liberal” by Paul Krugman. This work offers an insightful examination of progressive political thought and economic policy, emphasizing the significance of social equity, economic fairness, and the government’s role in fostering a just society.

I suggest watching the documentary “13th,” directed by Ava DuVernay. This film examines the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States, highlighting systemic issues that often go unaddressed. It offers a crucial perspective on the importance of equity and justice, which are central to my political philosophy.

I also strongly recommend "Birmingham's Black Civil Rights Movement" by Earl E. Thorpe. This book delves into the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama, emphasizing the significant role played by my great uncle, the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, in the fight for racial equality. It highlights his bravery and leadership amidst great challenges, illustrating his contributions to the movement and the wider struggle for civil rights in the United States.

Additionally, I have a strong sense of integrity and ethical responsibility. I believe in transparency and accountability, striving to uphold these principles in all of my actions. This commitment fosters trust between me and my constituents, which is essential for effective governance. My collaborative spirit also plays a crucial role; I enjoy working with others to develop comprehensive solutions to complex problems. I value teamwork and understand that collective efforts often lead to the most effective outcomes.

Furthermore, my resilience and adaptability enable me to navigate challenges with a positive attitude. I view obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning, which helps me remain focused on my goals. Lastly, my passion for social justice drives me to advocate for policies that promote equity and inclusion. With these qualities, I am confident in my ability to serve effectively and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I represent as an alderwoman.
As an elected Alderwoman, I believe my core responsibilities encompass a range of duties that are essential for effective governance and community representation.

First and foremost, I serve as a representative of the constituents in my district. This means actively engaging with residents, listening to their concerns, and advocating for their needs. I maintain open lines of communication to ensure that the voices of my community are heard in local government decisions. I prioritize town hall meetings, and outreach initiatives to build a strong connection with my constituents.

Another critical responsibility is legislative action. I participate in crafting, debating, and voting on policies and ordinances that impact our community. This requires a thorough understanding of local issues, as well as the ability to analyze proposed legislation and its potential effects on residents. By prioritizing initiatives that enhance public safety, education, economic development, and infrastructure, I aim to contribute to the overall well-being of our community.

Additionally, I play a key role in budgetary oversight. This includes reviewing and approving the city budget, ensuring that funds are allocated effectively to meet the needs of our residents. I advocate for responsible fiscal policies that support essential services, such as public safety, education, and social programs. By maintaining transparency in budgetary matters, I strive to build trust and accountability with my constituents.

Moreover, I focus on collaboration with other elected officials, community organizations, and stakeholders. Building partnerships is essential for addressing complex issues and leveraging resources to benefit our community. By working together with diverse groups, I can help develop comprehensive solutions that reflect the interests of all residents.

Lastly, I believe in being a champion for community development and engagement. I promote initiatives that encourage civic participation.
The legacy I aspire to leave is one that my sons, who are 12 and 21, can be proud of and carry forward. I want to create a positive impact on our community, ensuring that it is better for future generations than I received it. It is essential for me that my children see the importance of giving back and being involved in making a difference. I hope to instill in them the values of compassion, resilience, and civic responsibility.

I envision a community that thrives, where everyone has access to opportunities and resources necessary for growth and success. By advocating for policies that promote equity, education, and social justice, I aim to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and supportive environment. I want my sons to witness firsthand the power of community engagement and the profound changes that can result from collective action.

Ultimately, I hope my legacy reflects a commitment to service and a passion for uplifting those around me. I want my children to remember me not just for my accomplishments but for my dedication to others. If I can inspire them to continue this work and empower them to be leaders in their own right, then I will feel that I have truly succeeded in leaving a lasting legacy. Together, we can build a brighter future for our community and ensure that it remains a place where everyone can thrive.
The first historical event I remember from my lifetime is the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which occurred on January 28, 1986. I was just nine years old at the time. The tragedy deeply impacted me as I watched the news coverage unfold and learned about the courageous astronauts who lost their lives. It was a moment that highlighted the risks of space exploration and left a lasting impression on my understanding of both science and human endeavor.
My very first job was a day camp counselor for St. Jude Thaddeus school on the South Side of Chicago. I was in 8th grade and I worked for the school during the summers for several years.

My first high school job was as a Cart Girl at Dominick’s Grocery Store in Calumet City. I started by pushing carts, but after the adults in our community advocated for my safety while working at night, I was promoted to cashier. Their support made a significant difference in my experience and helped me transition to a role where I could work and be safe.

Throughout high school and college, I actively volunteered for political campaigns, participated in end apartheid campaigns at my church, and engaged in various social justice projects. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of community issues but also fueled my passion for advocacy and social change. Working alongside like-minded individuals, I learned the importance of civic engagement and the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause.
Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” which tells the story of Janie Crawford, a woman searching for her identity and voice in a male-dominated society.
Wonder Woman, a symbol of strength, compassion, and justice.
My campaign song Yeah Mo! It talks about my leadership and how hard I work for the people of Calumet City.
One of the most profound struggles in my life has been overcoming the trauma of being a rape survivor. This harrowing experience not only tested my strength but also shaped my identity in ways I could never have anticipated. It forced me to confront my own vulnerabilities and fight against the stigma that often surrounds survivors. Through therapy and support from loved ones, I learned to reclaim my voice and find power in my story. However, the journey to healing has been ongoing, filled with moments of doubt and pain.

In addition to this personal struggle, I have faced significant challenges as a woman in a field often dominated by men. Navigating an environment where my presence is frequently undervalued and my intellect is questioned has been disheartening. There have been countless instances where I felt dismissed or overlooked, simply because of my gender. This reality can be exhausting, as I constantly find myself striving to prove my worth and competence. Yet, I refuse to let these obstacles define me.

Instead, I channel my experiences into a determination to break barriers and advocate for change. I aim to create spaces where women are respected and valued for their contributions, regardless of the male-dominated culture that may exist. I draw strength from my past, transforming my struggles into a driving force for my work in the community. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others and encourage them to stand tall in the face of adversity. I believe that by addressing these issues head-on, we can foster a more inclusive environment where everyone—especially women—can thrive and be recognized for their abilities and intelligence.
As an Alderwoman, I believe it’s important for residents to understand the unique powers and responsibilities that come with this role, especially when a city is run properly. One key responsibility is influencing zoning and land use decisions. This authority allows me to shape the development of our community, impacting everything from residential neighborhoods to commercial spaces. It’s essential for residents to engage in discussions about local development, as it directly affects their quality of life.

Additionally, I play a vital role in allocating federal and state funds, such as Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). These funds are crucial for revitalizing neighborhoods, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting local programs. When residents are aware of this responsibility, they can advocate for projects that will benefit our community.

Public safety oversight is another important aspect of my role. I have a say in public safety policies, including how resources are allocated to police and fire departments. This allows me to influence initiatives related to community policing and crime prevention, and I encourage residents to engage in conversations about public safety strategies.

Finally, advocating for local businesses is a crucial part of my job. I work to support small businesses and promote economic development strategies that ensure our community thrives. By understanding these responsibilities, residents can become more engaged in local governance and contribute to creating a better community for all.
As the incumbent Alderwoman, I firmly believe that previous experience in government or politics can be beneficial for those holding this office. Such experience often provides valuable insights into the legislative process, community needs, and the intricacies of local governance. However, I do not subscribe to the notion of career politicians who may erode public trust. It is crucial to balance experience with a genuine commitment to serving the community.

While having a background in politics can help navigate the complexities of local government, I believe that true effectiveness comes from a deep understanding of the community and its residents. Those who have lived and worked in the community bring unique perspectives that can shape policies in meaningful ways. This connection fosters accountability and a commitment to the people we serve.

I also recognize that an influx of new voices and ideas is essential for healthy governance. Fresh perspectives can challenge the status quo and encourage innovative solutions to pressing issues. Therefore, while experience is valuable, it should not come at the cost of perpetuating a political class that prioritizes self-interest over public service.

Ultimately, I advocate for a balanced approach where individuals with a mix of experience and genuine community engagement can thrive in this role. This ensures that our local government remains responsive, accountable, and truly representative of the needs and aspirations of the residents I serve.
As an Alderwoman, I believe several key skills and areas of expertise are essential for effectively holding this office. First and foremost, strong communication skills are vital. This includes the ability to listen actively to constituents and convey ideas clearly, ensuring that residents feel heard and understood.

Additionally, a solid understanding of local governance and legislative processes is crucial. Familiarity with how laws are created and how local government operates enables effective advocacy for community needs. Financial literacy is also important; being able to analyze budgets and funding allocations ensures that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and directed toward priority projects.

Collaboration and negotiation skills are essential, as working with various stakeholders, including other officials, community organizations, and residents, is a daily part of the role. Lastly, a commitment to community engagement and the ability to build relationships with diverse groups can enhance trust and facilitate meaningful dialogue.

By possessing these skills and expertise, Alderwomen can better serve their communities, create positive change, and ensure that the voices of their constituents are represented in local government.
As an Alderwoman, I recognize that this office possesses unique qualities that make it an essential part of local government. First and foremost, the direct connection to the community sets this role apart. I have the privilege of representing the voices of my constituents, which creates a sense of accountability and enables me to address their specific needs and concerns. This close relationship builds trust and encourages civic engagement, making residents feel like active participants in their governance.

Additionally, the ability to influence local legislation and policy is a significant aspect of this role. I can craft and approve ordinances that directly impact the daily lives of residents, from public safety to housing initiatives. This power allows me to enact meaningful change and advocate for the community's best interests.

Moreover, the role of Alderwoman requires a collaborative spirit. I work alongside other elected officials and community organizations to address complex issues and develop comprehensive solutions. This cooperation is vital in creating a well-rounded approach to governance. Overall, the combination of community representation, legislative influence, and collaboration makes the office of Alderwoman a unique and crucial component of local government, allowing me to drive positive change in my community.

I’m endorsed overwhelmingly by the citizens of the 2nd Ward of Calumet City. Organizational endorsements are still coming in but the people’s endorsement is what matters.
I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are fundamental principles that underpin a healthy democracy. Public officials must operate with openness regarding their financial dealings, budgets, and expenditures to foster trust within the community. Transparency ensures that citizens can hold their leaders accountable and understand how public funds are being utilized. This accountability is crucial for preventing corruption and mismanagement, as it encourages ethical behavior and responsible governance.
