Moore Public Schools Elections

General election date:
February 9, 2016
Enrollment (13–14):
23,019 students

One of the five seats on the Moore Public Schools school board was scheduled for general election on February 9, 2016. District 1 incumbent Amy Reeves filed for re-election; however, no other candidates filed to challenge her in the race.[1]

Due to the lack of opposition, the election was canceled and Reeves was automatically re-elected to a new five-year term.[2]

This unopposed race fit with a history of low-contest elections in the district. The annual elections in 2012, 2013 and 2014 were all canceled due to unopposed races. Two candidates filed for the 2015 election, but one of the candidates unofficially withdrew prior to the election.

Voter and candidate information

The Moore Board of Education consists of five members elected by district to five-year terms. The District 1 seat was scheduled for election in 2016. There was no primary election, and the general election was scheduled to be held on February 9, 2016. A runoff election could have been held on April 5, 2016, if no candidate won a majority of votes cast in the general election. Since only one candidate filed for the election, it was canceled and the race did not appear on the ballot.[2]

Candidates had to file affidavits of candidacy between December 7, 2015, and December 9, 2015. The voter registration deadline for the general election was January 16, 2016.

What was at stake?

2016

One regular three-year term was up for election in 2016. Only one candidate filed for election. This followed a pattern of low-contest elections for Moore Public Schools Board of Education races. In 2014, one seat was up for election. Only one candidate filed for the race and it was canceled due to lack of opposition. One seat was up for election in 2015. District 5 incumbent Karen Shuey won re-election against challenger Bryan Kerr.[4]

Kerr stated on January 25, 2015, that he had "decided not to run."[5] However, the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the race was December 5, 2014. Kerr's name still appeared on the ballot and votes were cast for him.[6] Kerr officially endorsed Shuey for the seat.[7]

Ultimately, fewer than 150 votes were cast in the election. The low voter turnout meant that despite Kerr's withdrawal from the race, Shuey retained her seat with a lead of fewer than 30 votes.[8]
