An effort to recall Neil Abramson, a member of the Democratic Party, from his elected position representing District 98 in the Louisiana House of Representatives was launched on January 14, 2016.[1] Abramson was targeted for recall after he was the only Democrat to vote against Rep. Walt Leger's (D) bid for speaker. Leger lost his bid to Republican Rep. Taylor Barras.[1]
No news of the effort was reported after the initial talk of a recall in January 2016, and the effort was assumed abandoned.
Timeline
- January 11, 2016: Abramson voted against Leger's bid for speaker.
Background
On January 11, 2016, Abramson voted against his fellow Democrat, Rep. Walt Leger, in his bid for the speakership. Instead, Abramson supported Republican Rep. Taylor Barras, who eventually was elected to the position. Leger was elected speaker pro tem.[1]
Supporters of the recall were angry and felt betrayed by Abramson. Even though Abramson did not have the deciding vote on who became the new speaker, his fellow Democrats described his actions "...as a betrayal that kneecapped both the city and Gov. John Bel Edwards before the new Democratic governor even took office."[1][2]
In response to Abramson's actions, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu made the following statement:
“ | Walt Leger would have been a great speaker. He has a history of bringing people together across party lines. For him to have lost this race in this way was a missed opportunity for bipartisanship. For him to lose it with the help of a democratic member of the New Orleans delegation is inexplicable.[3] | ” |

- If fewer than 1,000 eligible voters: 40 percent of eligible voters for office at time of last election
