Nicholas DeLaat was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 52 of the Wyoming House of Representatives.

DeLaat's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Transparency and Communication
- The lack of communication and transparency is one of the largest problems at the Federal and State level with our elected officials, especially our lawmakers.
- There is not a single person we can elect as a legislature that knows everything about ranching, oil, small business, farming, coal, gas, construction, advertising, etc. This is why, now...more than ever, it is imperative to have a legislator that communicates with the experts of his district, and I already have the site and technology (and knowledge to do so) in place to launch this high transparency and fruitful communication system as soon as the first session I serve.
Energy and Federal Government Overreach
- We all know the attacks that are coming our way. The BLM for years has held up oil and gas drilling permits intentionally, the EPA is thundering down regulation after regulation on the power plants, and the President has put a moratorium on coal right when the companies are filing bankruptcy to put the nail in the coffin of his immoral "clean" energy agenda.
- Should be common sense, right? Well, I hate to break it to you but there is nothing common about sense. Yes, the energy will come back after the grid is starved and people are paying over 450% on their electric bills (not to mention goods markups because of cost of production) but can Wyoming wait for people to be affected so Washington wakes up? No.
Budget, Fiscal Responsibility, and Small Business
- With energy prices tanked and tourism (followed by Agriculture) only holding a small percentage of Wyoming's economy, we need to work on a much better budget. The budget year has just passed, and what did we see? The State eliminated the k-12 literacy programs while the same day funding $8 Million dollars into UW Sports. Most of the non-essential projects ($11 mil. per year in cloud seeding for example) have not been canceled. Education, one of the most important roles of the state is taking a beating.
- What is the State's answer? Taxes of course, there were __ new taxes in this legislative session alone. There were cuts where there shouldn't have been, no cuts where there should have been, and not even looking at cuts elsewhere that is obvious.
- For example, we currently spend about $190 per day per prisoner, when we could be spending $60 per day thanks to new technology that would require no investment on the state's (taxpayers) part. If non-violent criminals could be drug tested, alcohol tested, have full time GPS, and is out working and paying taxes while serving his or her sentence it enormously helps with the budget, creates more revenue, and gets these people back into our society as productive members (kind of the whole point of the prison system).
- Nobody in our legislature thought of this. This one example is one of many that we need voiced in Cheyenne to run the type of budget the Citizens of Wyoming deserve. It should be run as efficient and accurate as a home checkbook![1]
