Martinez ran in the 2012 election for Texas State Senate, District 9. Martinez ran unopposed in the May 29 primary election and was defeated by Kelly Hancock (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]

Martinez expressed favor for using money from the Rainy Day Fund to make up for cuts made to education, and letting certain tax credits for corporations expire, such as the $1 billion-per-year tax exemption for natural gas companies. He stated that he would work to protect union jobs.[2]
