Hyatt earned a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in education from the University of Florida. He began his teaching career in 1972 and worked in Alachua County schools until his retirement in 2010. Hyatt was named the 2009 Alachua County Teacher of the Year.[1][2]

The August 26, 2014, general election in Alachua County featured three seats up for election. Incumbent Gunnar F. Paulson faced and defeated challenger Philoron A. Wright in the District 3 race. Rob Hyatt and Jancie Vinson sought to replace Carol Oyenarte, who did not file for re-election in District 5. Hyatt won the vacated seat. District 1 incumbent April M. Griffin won re-election without opposition for a second term in the District 1 seat.
