Three of the seven seats on the Round Rock Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Only the race for Place 7 was contested. The incumbent chose not to file for re-election, and Mason Moses defeated Tony Pitts for the open seat. Incumbents Nikki Gonzales and Chad Chadwell won re-election without opposition in Place 1 and Place 2, respectively.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Round Rock Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to four-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]

The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

Round Rock Independent School District is located in both Travis County, Texas and Williamson County, Texas. The seats for these counties are Austin and Georgetown, respectively. Combined, the areas of Travis and Williamson Counties were home to 1,685,072 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 21st-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 46,666 students.[7]
