Campaign themes
2015
Kerwin's campaign website listed the following themes for this election:
Early childhood education
“ |
Investing in early childhood education pays for itself when you compare it to the cost the city and state will have to endure due to the adverse effects of not educating children early on. Intervening in a child's education results in less remediation, fewer high school dropouts, less criminal activity, and a higher educated workforce. The National Institute for Early Childhood Education Research estimates that the return on investment is 7 dollars for every 1 dollar spent on early childhood education. The city of Albuquerque has proven that they can provide quality early childhood education, so why not continue to do so by opening 5 to 10 more preschools in strategic locations. [2] |

Homelessness
“ |
There are currently many programs serving lots of different niches within the homeless community. But all of these programs have different eligibility requirements in order to house a person. Sadly, there is no program where the only requirement to be housed is that you don't have a home. Lots of great work is being done to serve the least fortunate and most vulnerable members of our society. However, anyone living in the city knows we are a long way from eradicating homelessness. Housing the homeless has proven to be cost effective, it's time we fully fund these programs to the point where we no longer see people sleeping in the alley. We all benefit when we take care of the least fortunate in our city. [2] |

Community gardens
“ |
There are so many vacant dirt lots that we can really get creative with their use. How about a zen garden? Or a sculpture garden? A butterfly garden? Or a simple xeriscape garden? Because these parks are so small and numerous their possible implementations are near limitless. [2] |
