Four of the seven seats on the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District school board were up for general election on May 7, 2016. Place 2 incumbent Joshua Overfelt and Place 7 Amy Haynes filed for re-election, while Charles "Chuck" Garabedian did not file for re-election in Place 6. Overfelt ran unopposed for re-election and Haynes defeated challenger Guadalupe BuenRostro Jr. to win another term. Candidate Diana Gonzales defeated Abelardo Casillas to fill the open Place 6 seat. There was a special election for the Place 1 seat vacated by Fernando Quiz. Ken Smith defeated fellow candidates Pedro DeHoyos Michael Mog in the race.[1][2][3]

Voter and candidate information
The San Felipe Del Rio CISD Board of Trustees is composed of seven members who are elected to four-year terms. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. Three seats were scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016, and one seat was scheduled for special election. There was no primary election.[1]
Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[1]

About the district
San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District is located in Val Verde County, Texas. The county seat is Del Rio. The county's population was 48,988 in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[8] The district was the 102nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 10,671 students.[9]
Demographics
Val Verde County underperformed in comparison to Texas a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $42,735, while it was $52,576 for the state. The county poverty rate was 22.2 percent, compared to state's 17.2 percent.[10]
