Issues in the election
Candidates debate how to solve overcrowding
At a forum sponsored by the Santa Maria League of Women Voters, the four candidates who sought the two at-large seats up for election on the Santa Maria-Bonita Elementary School District Board of Education all agreed that class sizes needed to shrink. They disagreed, however, on how best to fix that problem.
Incumbent Fidenzio "Bruno" Brunello and challengers Ricky Lara and Janeen Miller pointed to passing Measure T, which was on the ballot November 4, 2014, as the answer, saying the $45 million bond proposition would give the district the money it needed to build another campus as well as improve existing schools. Incumbent William "Will" Smith, however, did not believe Measure T was the answer. Instead, he suggested the district move to a track system to reduce class sizes. He also said if the district had been more prepared, the issue of overcrowding could have been avoided.[11]
