May 9, 2019: There are 12 million registered boats in the United States. The overwhelming majority of them—95%—are “small, towable boats under 26 ft.”[1]
During 2016, an estimated 142 million Americans went boating at least once. That’s more than double the number who attended a major league baseball game.[2]
Blessed by both a long coastline and large population, Florida has more boat owners than any other state. Just over 900,000 boats are registered in the Sunshine State.[3]
Number two on the list might be a surprise to many: Minnesota residents own more than 800,000 boats. In fact, on a per capita basis, Minnesota voters are more than three times as likely as Floridians to own a boat. Wisconsin, South Carolina, and Maine are also near the top of the list in terms of per capita boat ownership.
