Semi-finalists for Indiana Supreme Court seat announced: Six women remain

Indianapolis, Indiana: The Judicial Nominating Commission has selected the ten semi-finalists still in the running to fill the vacancy left on the Supreme Court by the retirement of Justice Frank Sullivan.[1] The remaining candidates are:

Twelve applicants were decided against in order to arrive at this list of semi-finalists, ten of which (83.3%) were women. Sixteen of the twenty-two initial applicants (72.7%) were women; there are now only six female applicants (60%) left in the selection pool. Governor Mitch Daniels has received intense pressure to appoint a woman to the court, which is discussed at some length here.

Following interviews of these candidates on August 8th and 9th, three finalists will be chosen and sent to Governor Daniels for final selections.[1]

UPDATE: On August 8th, 2012 the three finalists for the seat were chosen by the judicial nominating commission. The three finalists are Steven R. Nation, Hamilton Superior Court 1; Loretta H. Rush, Tippecanoe Superior Court 3[4]; and Geoffrey G. Slaughter, Attorney - Indianapolis.[5]

This final stage in narrowing the field has lowered the percentage of women per pool down from an initial 72.7% of applicants, to a final 33.3%. Governor Daniels is facing continued pressure to select a female Justice, with Loretta Rush now his only option.[6] The Governor has 60 days from the selection of finalists to make his appointment.
