Campaign themes

2015

Calvert's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Education

  • Excerpt: "Speedy is a strong supporter of public education, as evidenced by the fact that he, his wife, and both sons graduated from public schools in the district. His wife has been an educator for over 20 years and the entire family is devoted to the local community college system with all family members attending East Central Community College. The family also represents the State’s three major public universities, with Speedy graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi, Jamie holding degrees from Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, and both boys attending Mississippi State University. Speedy feels that the combination of public schools, community college, and public universities has provided his family with a myriad of educational and social opportunities. However, Speedy does believe in a family’s right to choose how and where to educate their children."

Small Business

  • Excerpt: "As the owner of a small family business that has existed for over 65 years, Speedy supports small business, local industries, and downtown merchants. He advocates decreased taxation and governmental regulations that place increased burdens on entrepreneurs."

Disaster Relief

  • Excerpt: "After having lost his home in the April, 2014 tornado, Speedy and his family have a renewed respect for disaster relief and first responders. Even though the family traveled to the MS gulf coast to assist in Hurricane Katrina relief, they did not realize the impact that local law enforcement and fire fighters have during an emergency until they were faced with a weather catastrophe of their own. Speedy backs funding for firefighters and police departments."

2nd Amendment

  • Excerpt: "As a long-time member of the NRA, Speedy fully supports the right to bear arms. A hunter since childhood, Speedy believes guns should be available for sport and for home protection. He is against any legislation to limit one’s right to purchase and bear arms."

Jobs/Industry

  • Excerpt: "Speedy views the creation of jobs and recruitment of industry as two of the most important issues facing District 18. Speedy has personally launched and sold two businesses and has been involved in recruiting several new businesses to the area. He is especially interested in the renewable forestry industry. As a landowner, he understands the importance of timber management and controlled harvesting and replanting. Agriculture also enjoys his full support, as Speedy comprehends the needs of poultry farmers, cattle ranchers, and others."
