Four seats on the Spotsylvania County Public Schools School Board were up for general election on November 3, 2015. The seats of Chancellor District incumbent Dawn Shelley, Courtland District incumbent James Meyer, Livingston District incumbent Ray Lora and Salem District incumbent William Blaine Jr. were up for election.[1]

Board member Blaine defeated a challenge from Shawn Davis. Incumbents Shelley and Meyer ran unopposed and won re-election to their seats. Newcomer Kirk Twigg, who was an unsuccessful candidate in 2011, ran unopposed and won the Livingston District seat vacated by incumbent Ray Lora, who did not file for re-election.

Spotsylvania County Public Schools is located in northeast Virginia in Spotsylvania County. The county seat of Spotsylvania County is Spotsylvania Courthouse. This county was home to 129,188 residents in 2014, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2012-2013 school year, Spotsylvania County Public Schools was the 11th-largest school district in Virginia and served 23,768 students.[3]

Demographics

Spotsylvania County underperformed compared to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.2 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Spotsylvania County was $78,345, compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate was 7.6 percent, compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Spotsylvania County School Board is a seven-member board elected by district to staggered four-year terms. Seats in Chancellor, Courtland, Livingston and Salem Districts were on the ballot in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015. The next scheduled election for seats in Battlefield, Lee Hill and Berkeley Districts was November 2017. The filing deadline for candidates interested in running for the board was June 9, 2015.[5][6]
