Russell ran in the 2012 election for Texas State Senate, District 1. Russell ran unopposed in the May 29 primary election and was defeated by incumbent Kevin Eltife (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]

Russell stated that he would work to eliminate the State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency, in addition to other state agencies he deemed unnecessary. He criticized the Republican Party for a perceived focus on social issues over creating jobs.[2]
