One of the five seats on the Union Public Schools school board was scheduled for by district general election on February 9, 2016. Zone 1 incumbent Jeff Bennett was up for re-election but was the sole candidate to file for the contest.[1]
Due to this lack of opposition, the election was canceled and Bennett was automatically re-elected.[2]
This marked the fifth consecutive canceled election cycle for the district. Elections in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 were all canceled due to lack of opposition.

Voter and candidate information
The Union Board of Education consists of five members elected by district to five-year terms. The Zone 1 seat was scheduled for election in 2016. There was no primary election, and the general election was scheduled to be held on February 9, 2016. A runoff election could have been held on April 5, 2016, if no candidate won a majority of votes cast in the general election. Since only one candidate filed for the election, it was canceled and the race did not appear on the ballot.[2]
Candidates had to file affidavits of candidacy between December 7, 2015, and December 9, 2015. The voter registration deadline for the general election was January 16, 2016.

2016
The Zone 1 seat was up for election in 2016. The incumbent was the only candidate to file in the race. This marked the fifth consecutive unopposed school board race in the district.
Issues in the election
District proposes $27 million bond
Two propositions appeared on the 2016 school board election ballot, noted by the district as a consequence of merging several smaller districts into Union Public Schools. The first proposed to use $25.5 million to fund the building of a new elementary school, while the second proposed to put approximately $1.5 million toward the purchase of textbooks and technology while also funding other capital improvement projects. The district noted that the passage of either—or both—propositions would not raise taxes "above traditional levels" for district residents.[5]
