Terry McAuliffe (D) was term-limited and ineligible to run for re-election. Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D), former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie (R), and patent attorney Cliff Hyra (L) ran for the open seat. The most recent overall race rating from five separate outlets was Lean Democrat.[1] Virginia law requires that voters register 22 days in advance of an election, meaning that the final day to register to vote in this election was October 16, 2017.
