A Republican special election for the position of Utah House of Representatives District 58 will take place July 30. The winner of the special election will be appointed to the seat by the governor.[1]
Claudia Jarrett, Jeff McDonald, Derrin Owens, Katrina Long and Jamison McPherson are all vying for the seat, which is vacant following Jon Cox's (R) resignation on July 8, 2015. Cox resigned after Gov. Gary Herbert (R) named him to his senior staff as the director of communication.[2][1]
If there is a vacancy in the Utah Legislature, the governor is responsible for selecting a replacement. A liaison for the political party that last held the seat must recommend a successor to the governor. The vacancy must be filled immediately, and the person who is selected for the vacant seat serves for the remainder of the unfilled term.[1][3]
