Municipal elections taking place in two cities on Tuesday could have a significant impact on issues affecting each of the cities, including pension reform, airport renovations and streetcar extensions.

San Jose, Calif., will hold a runoff election to finally decide who will fill the seat in District 4. Candidates Manh Nguyen and Timothy Orozco were separated by a mere 300 votes in the April 7 general election. Tuesday's election will finalize the council that will work with newly elected Mayor Sam Liccardo as the city continues to navigate its pension problems, which have consistently dogged San Jose since voters approved the controversial Measure B in June 2012.[1]

Residents of Kansas City, Mo., will also take to the polls to select a new mayor and 12 city council members. Those elected to fill the positions will help determine how several issues facing the city play out. For example, Incumbent Mayor Sly James has been an ardent supporter of extending the city's streetcar routes. If he is re-elected, it's likely he will continue to advocate this proposal in 2015, though voters turned it down at the ballot in August 2014.[2]

The future of a dilapidated, multi-use event complex and possible renovations to the airport are two other major issues affecting the city. Voters and elected officials remain divided over whether to spend approximately $1.2 billion converting the airport from a three-terminal plan to a single-terminal plan. A lease agreement between the city, the airport and associated airline partners requires a new plan to be established and put into motion by April 2016. Meanwhile, the fate of Kemper Arena remains undecided after the city council chose to entertain multiple bids for the project; as a result, the issue has made its way into the 2015 election cycle debate.[3][4][5][6][7]

In addition to the municipal elections, voters will also decide the fate of a local California ballot measure and determine which candidates will advance to the July 21 general election for District 33's Wisconsin State Senate seat.
