Karen Gievers was a judge on the Second Circuit Court in Florida. She was first elected to this position on November 2, 2010.[1] Gievers retired April 27, 2019.[2]

Gievers was up for re-election in 2016. No other candidates filed for the primary race, which was to be held on August 30, 2016. The unopposed election was canceled, and Gievers was automatically re-elected to a six-year term ending in January 2023.

Gievers received an A.A. degree from Miami Dade Community College in 1974 and a B.A. degree in economics from Florida International University in 1975. She earned her J.D. from the University of Miami Law School in 1978.[3]

Gievers began her career in 1976 as a law clerk for the firm of Wolf & Schoninger. The following year, she began serving as a law clerk for Sams Anderson in Miami. She then worked as an associate, and then partner, of the law firm of Anderson Moss from 1979 to 1987. In 1987, she started her own practice, Gievers, P.A., where she worked as the senior attorney until her judicial election. She moved the firm from Miami to Tallahassee in 1999. In 2010, she was elected to the circuit court.[3]

Florida's 20 circuit courts all had seats up for election in 2016. Of the 151 seats up for election, 125 saw only one candidate file for the election. The unopposed races were canceled and the sole candidates were automatically elected. Of the 26 opposed races, only 10 saw more than two candidates file. [4]

Gievers won 29 percent of the vote in the primary. She then defeated Barbara Hobbs with 59 percent of the vote in the general election.[1]
