He graduated from Eau Claire North High School in 1990 and went on to serve in the US Army from 1990 to 1993 and as a US Army Reserve medic from 1993-1996. He earned an associate degree in police science from Chippewa Valley Technical College in 2001. James' career experience includes working as a small business owner, a warehouse specialist, a police office, SWAT team member, and firefighter.
