One seat on the Henrico County Public Schools School Board was up for special election on November 4, 2014.
Two newcomers, Michelle Ogburn and Surya Dhakar, competed for the Three Chopt District seat vacated by former board member Diana Winston.[1] Ogburn defeated Dhakar to win the seat and to complete its unexpired one-year term.[2]

Henrico County Public Schools is located in Henrico County, Virginia. Henrico County was home to 318,611 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Henrico County Public Schools was the sixth-largest school district in Virginia and served 49,654 students.[4]
Demographics
Henrico County outperformed the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 39.7 percent of Henrico County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Henrico County was $61,048 compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate in Henrico County was 10.7 percent compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The Henrico School Board consists of five members elected by specific geographic districts to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the special election was held on November 4, 2014. One seat was up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which ended on June 10, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[6]

Endorsements
Surya Dhakar received endorsements from 7th U.S. Congressional District candidate David Brat (R), State Sen. Steve Martin (R-11), State Rep. Peter Farrell (R-56), State Rep. Rob Bell (R-58), State Rep. John O'Bannon (R-73) and former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore (R).[7] He listed additional endorsements on his campaign website.
Michelle Ogburn received endorsements from the Henrico Political Action Committee for Education, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and former Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore (R).[8] She listed additional endorsements on her campaign website.
Campaign finance
Candidates reported a total of $39,320.23 in contributions and $32,492.73 in expenditures during the election, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.[9]
