Richard Wellborn was a judge on the Dona Ana County Magistrate Court, Division 4, in New Mexico. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Susana Martinez on October 4, 2013.[1] Wellborn was defeated in the primary election to the Dona Ana County Magistrate Court in 2014. He stepped down when his term ended on December 31, 2014.[2]

Wellborn ran for re-election to the Dona Ana County Magistrate Court.
Primary: He was defeated in the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014, receiving 48.2 percent of the vote. He competed against Norman E. Osborne. [2][3]

2010

Wellborn unsuccessfully ran for judge on the 1st District Court, Division 1 against Manuel I. Arrieta. Wellborn received 46.4% of the vote compared to Arrieta's 53.6%.[4][5]

Education

Wellborn has an undergraduate degree in psychology from New Mexico State University and a J.D. from the University of New Mexico.[1]

Career

Prior to being appointed as a judge, Wellborn was an attorney in private practice where he handled criminal defense, domestic relation cases and general civil matters. He has also served as a senior trial prosecutor for the Third Judicial District Attorney's Office and as general counsel for the New Mexico Department of Transportation and Department of Game and Fish.[1]
