Westra received his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and his J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law.[3]

Michigan held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 2, 2016. The candidate filing deadline for incumbents was March 21, and the deadline for non-incumbents was April 19.[4] Incumbent Vincent C. Westra ran unopposed in the 8th District general election.[2]

Westra was re-elected (along with judges Anne E. Blatchford and Carol A. Husum) to the 8th District Court in the general election on November 2, 2010. He received 33.65 percent of the vote.[5]

Judges of the Michigan District Courts are each elected to six-year terms.[6] The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector of the district, licensed to practice law in the state, under the age of 70, and have five years of experience practicing law.
