Noah Haynes Swayne (1804-1884) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1862 after a nomination from President Abraham Lincoln. Swayne retired on January 24, 1881. Prior to joining the court, Swayne was a private practice attorney in Columbus, Ohio.[1]
Swayne was one of five justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Lincoln. He served during The Taney Court, The Chase Court and The Waite Court.[2]
Education
Swayne received his legal education by reading law.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
Supreme Court of the United States
Swayne was nominated by President Abraham Lincoln on January 21, 1862, to fill a seat vacated by Justice John McLean. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 24, 1862, and received commission that same day. Swayne retired on January 24, 1881.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Stanley Matthews.
