I'm Michel Francisco Hurtado and I am a Republican who likes to draw from many sources to solve the problems that confront people, seize opportunities to elevate people, and create those opportunities where they do not currently exist. I'm a student of history at heart and I believe this has afforded me a view of politics too often overlooked, that being the ability to see not just things playing out, but why. I enjoy researching history and political theory the most but I also enjoy reading about economics, philosophy, and science fiction. I'm an avid Star Wars and Batman fan and I enjoy spending time with friends at diners, bowling alleys, and other places where everyday, average people spend their time. I enjoy classical music and pop music from the 1950s to the 1980s. I am proud to say that I'm a refined, old soul. I'm not the outdoors type but I appreciate nature and its healing qualities. I love to laugh, particularly at my own expense and I always try to find a person's redeeming quality. I value hierarchy and tradition and have a great respect for institutions and offices. My faith is the most important thing to me and I seek to do right by people. I am involved in politics because I want to leave my community in a better place than I found it and I want to make personal connections with people that remind them of everything positive in life.
  • I believe that government should be open, honest, and transparent. People should know what is involved in crafting and executing policy.
  • I believe that government should first and foremost protect people and do only that what they cannot do on their own. The best solutions are usually the ones found closest to the people that know the problem firsthand.
  • I believe that those seeking office and those holding office should always listen to their voters and residents. We have elections for a reason and the people must always have a voice.
I am most passionate about things that can foster a sense of community amongst people. I like when people band together and work for a solution that has real, tangible results in their neighborhood. I believe that public safety, be that from the law enforcement side or the quality of life side is what most people care about. I'm also passionate about policies that can assist in rejuvenating urban areas and opening up opportunity for people who feel there is a set limit to what the can achieve because of where they live or what they look like.
As a student of history, I look up to many people but the two most important to me are my mother and Jesus Christ. My mother has consistently displayed fortitude, good humor, and kindness throughout her life and I'm very proud to be her son. Without her guidance and God's grace I'm not sure I'd be where I am or who I am.

A willingness to always learn more, never thinking one knows enough. Consistency, be the same person in public that you are in private.
I am the same person in all situations. What one person sees and gets is what any other person sees and gets. I love to learn, I like to be challenged. I really do enjoy interacting with all people. I try to always be aware that someone is in a worse situation that I am and that I should be humble, gentle, and ready to sacrifice. I have conviction, vision, and strong work ethic. There is no limit to what we can achieve.
Know your district, know the history and culture of it's towns and locales. Always stay in touch with the common people. Know the local spots, the restaurants, the schools, the parks, etc. Through this you can truly represent your constituents in the legislature.
That I brought out the best in myself and the people around me. That if mistakes were made I owned up to them and corrected them as best I could. That I improved the lives and opportunities of the people that elected me and showed them that the system works for them, not against them.
Cashier and parking attendant at the Cure Insurance Arena. I have been working there since my senior year of high school.
The Bible. I can turn to almost any page randomly and find comfort and guidance from God.
Josiah Bartlet from The West Wing or Han Solo from Star Wars
Reading too many books at a time and trying to fit in too many outings with friends into one weekend.
I believe that a governor must be the liaison between the public at large and the legislature. The governor must take note of recurring problems and forge relationships with those in and out of government to come up with the solutions. Then they take it to the legislature to iron out the details so they may create good policy.
I believe that New Jersey absolutely must focus on how we fund our schools. Property taxes in this state are and have been increasing far beyond what most homeowners and even renters can afford. This is leading to a population drain which will further undercut the tax based needed to support public institutions in New Jersey.
I believe that a state legislator should have a desire to help people and make good policy. If they've come to the desire to serve in the legislature through experience in government, experience in business, or a simple wish to right some wrongs then they should run. Be the change that you seek!
100%. The General Assembly and Senate together are only 120 people. That's one third of my high school graduating class and we all got along with all of our differences, be they political, demographic, or personality. I'd like to see a legislature built more on personal connection than party or ideological identity.
Why do I like Italian cars? Dego fast.
Absolutely. The political process has to involve all those with a stake in the issue and not every group looks at or has experienced a problem the same way. Some solutions may leave others out or unfairly benefit another group.
