Recall reports

An effort to recall City Councilman John Huisman in Blue Earth, Minnesota was unsuccessful. The city council voted 6-1 against calling a recall election for Huisman in April 2021.[1]

Recall supporters

The recall was initiated after Huisman co-signed a letter to the KBEW radio station, threatening a boycott of the station if a particular radio program was not taken off the air. Organizers said that Huisman had thereby violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.[1]

Recall opponents

The city council voted not to schedule the recall election based on the report of attorney Christopher Kennedy. Kennedy said that the Minnesota State Constitution requires that officials commit malfeasance or nonfeasance for a recall election to go forward. Malfeasance occurs when an official acts unlawfully in his or her duties as an official, while nonfeasance occurs when an official fails to perform his or her duties. Kennedy added that the allegations against Huisman did not meet that standard.[1]
