A special election for the position of Mississippi House of Representatives District 72 was called for August 23. A runoff election was held on September 13. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 25.[1]

The seat was vacant following Kimberly Campbell's (D) resignation in May 2016.[1]

A. Shae Buchanon-Williams, Synarus Green, Debra Gibbs, and Theresa Kennedy faced off in the special election.[2] Candidates in Mississippi special elections run without party labels. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Green and Gibbs, met in a runoff election, which Gibbs won.[3][4][5]
