Sonna M. Anderson was Judge No. 2 for the South Central Judicial District of North Dakota. Anderson was based out of Bismarck, which is located in Burleigh County. Anderson was appointed to the position in December 2003 by Governor John Hoven to succeed former Judge Benny Graff. Her first term began on February 1, 2004, and she was elected to the position in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.[1] Anderson won re-election to a new six-year term in 2016.

Anderson retired on June 30, 2018 due to health concerns.[2]

There were 23 North Dakota District Court seats up for election in 2016, all of the seats appeared on the June 14, 2016, primary ballot. There were four contested races that appeared on the ballot for the general election on November 8, 2016. Two of the contested races had open seats where the sitting judge did not seek re-election.

Anderson was re-elected to the South Central Judicial District of North Dakota. She received 99.32 percent of the vote.[3][4]

Education

Anderson received an undergraduate education in Trondheim, Norway, in 1978, and earned her bachelor's degree business administration from the University of North Dakota in 1981. She also minored in Norwegian and Spanish. She earned her J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law in 1985. Anderson was admitted to the North Dakota State Bar in 1985.[5]

Career

Anderson also clerked for Mountain States Legal Foundation during law school.[5]
