Schutz received his undergraduate degree from Moorhead State University and his J.D. from the University of North Dakota in 1987.[1]

Schutz was a partner at Hanes & Schutz from 1992 to 2010. He was an associate at the firm from 1991 to 1992. He was also an associate at Holland & Hart from 1987 to 1991.[1]

According to its website, the commission evaluates judges based on the following criteria: integrity, legal knowledge, communication skills, judicial temperament, and administrative performance.[3]
